The distributive property states that

a(b + c) = ab + ac and a(b - c) = ab - ac

Example: 3(4 + 2) = 3(4) + 3(2) = 18
Example: 3(4 - 2) = 3(4) - 3(2) = 6

If 3X + 3Y = 21, then what is the value of X + Y?

A. 3
B. 6
C. 7
D. Not enough information is given

3X + 3Y= 3(X + Y) = 21

Three times what number equals 21? The answer is 7.
